Kazan Soda

Kazan Soda is our newest production facility

Established in 2011, Kazan started commercial operations at the end of 2017 following our investment of over US$ 2 billion to develop the facility. After a period of ramp up during 2018 and 2019, Kazan today produces over 2.5 million tonnes of Soda Ash and 200,000 tonnes of sodium bicarbonate every year. During the next two years, we will invest over US$ 80 million to increase production by a further 600,000 tonnes of Soda Ash per year by 2023 and further reduce our unit production costs.

The Kazan facility has over 45 years of remaining mineable trona reserves which are extracted using solution mining. The production plant consists of three sub-units : mining, processing and a gas-powered cogen facility producing power and steam for use in the plant and with excess power generation exported to the State grid. The plant was designed and engineered by TCC, one of the world’s leading engineering companies, and utilises Siemens turbine and power plant technology, rotating equipment and control systems.

Eti Soda

First established in 1998

Eti Soda is located in the same geographic region as Kazan Soda, and has been successfully producing for over 10 years. Following over US$ 700 million of initial investment, commercial operations started in 2009. We further expanded our production facilities in 2017 and today Eti Soda produces over 1.65 million tonnes of Soda Ash and 200,000 tonnes of sodium bicarbonate every year.

Eti Soda was the first facility in the world to utilise innovative solution mining technology on a commercial scale and has almost 25 years of remaining mineable trona reserves. The production plant consists of three sub-units: mining, processing and a coal-powered cogen facility producing power and steam for use in the plant. The plant was designed and engineered by TCC and CMEC, and utilises Siemens and Goulds rotating equipment and control systems.

Ciner Wyoming

We acquired this facility in 2015, but the mine has been operating since 1962

Ciner Wyoming is located near Green River, Wyoming, USA, in the heart of the world’s largest trona resource basin. Today, we produce around 2.5 million tonnes of Soda Ash every year. During the next two years, we will be investing over US$ 300 million to expand and upgrade this facility, increasing production by a further 1.0 million tonnes per year by 2023 and further reducing our unit production costs.

Ciner Wyoming has almost 60 years of remaining mineable trona reserves, which are extracted using conventional underground mechanical mining and processed using monohydrate production technology in six active processing units. We also utilise natural deca rehydration in our four evaporation ponds, to further improve Soda Ash recovery rates and drive cost efficiencies. During 2020, we will be bringing on-steam a new gas-powered cogen facility that will provide around 30% of our current electricity needs.

Derince Port

In Turkey, our main export terminal is Derince Port

Over 85% of our production from Turkey is exported, with almost 70% exported in bulk from our dedicated port facility at Derince. Approximately 300 km from our production facilities, Derince Port has a 330m long pier that can load the world’s largest bulk carrier ships at a rate of over 2,200 tonnes per hour. We also export in 27 tonne container liner bags and 1.25 tonne bags from other port facilities.

Global supply chain reliability is a key part of our success

We are the largest global exporter of Soda Ash, delivering product from our three production facilities to over 150 individual destinations in over 40 countries. To achieve this, we have an integrated global supply chain that operates 24/7.

In Turkey, 100% of our production from Eti and Kazan is shipped by road via a fleet of over 350 silo trailers, with over 80% exported, mainly to Europe, Asia, South America, the Middle East and Africa, with small volumes also supplying the US East Coast and China.

Over 70% of our Turkish production volumes are sold via approximately 30 exclusive regional distributors around the world, under multi-year supply agreements. Our distributors are an extension of our global supply chain and serve small and medium sized industrial consumers in their designated supply regions.

 US Exports

In the United States, we export approximately 70% of our production and sell the remainder in the domestic market to around 80 large industrial customers and regional distributors.

Almost 100% of our Wyoming production is transported by rail to domestic customers and via ports in Portland, Oregon and Galveston, Texas for the export markets.

Today, our US export volumes are handled by ANSAC (the American Natural Soda Ash Corporation) and sold mainly to Asia, South America, the Middle East and Africa. We have given notice to leave ANSAC.

Following our departure, we will manage our own US export volumes utilising our own integrated global supply chain.

Solution mining

First developed at Eti Soda, we are the only company in the world to use innovative solution mining technology to extract trona ore.

We use this at both our Eti and Kazan facilities. This patented production method injects heated water into the underground ore body, which then dissolves the trona forming brine solution. The brine is then extracted to the surface, and pumped to a central processing facility.

This closed loop system is safer (no underground operatives), has minimal impact on the surface, uses significantly less energy and water than other production methods and also produces significantly less CO2 emissions.

Our port facilities

Soda Ash: Life's invisible ingredient

Soda Ash is an essential, but invisible, ingredient in many products which we all use every day.

Over half of all Soda Ash production is used in glass manufacturing, but it is also used in a wide range of other products, such as powdered detergents and soaps and rechargeable batteries, as well as being used extensively in metallurgical processes, and across the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Importantly, Soda Ash is increasingly being used to improve our environment and reduce polluting emissions by removing sulphur dioxide and other harmful chemicals from exhaust fumes in shipping and other industrial flue gas emissions.

Soda Ash: How it is used

When processed, Soda Ash can vary in density, size and shape. This flexibility allows it to be used in a variety of everyday products. From office building windows to detergents, food manufacturing to internet cables, some common examples are listed below.

Sodium Bicarbonate

In addition to Soda Ash, we also produce approximately 400,000 tonnes per year of Sodium Bicarbonate, also known as “Baking Soda”, at our facilities in Eti and Kazan.

Like Soda Ash, Sodium Bicarbonate is a safe inorganic compound that is chemically closely related to Soda Ash (aka Sodium Carbonate).

Uses of Sodium Bicarbonate

The main uses of Sodium Bicarbonate are as a raising agent in food manufacture, as an ingredient in pharmaceutical healthcare and animal feed products, and in waste water treatment.

More recently, Sodium Bicarbonate is increasingly being used in new environmental applications, including the desulphurisation or “scrubbing” of flue gas emissions, particularly in the shipping industry.
